Detroit launches citywide rental property compliance effort
Perhaps in the not-so-distant future, the days of negligent landlords will be behind us. The City of Detroit announced a plan to bring rental properties up to code, zip code by zip code across the city. Aimed at both helping renters and rewarding good landlords in the city, the program will identify every rental property across the city to make sure they’re safe and up to code.
The initial zip codes to kick off the program are on the far east, northwest, and southwest neighborhoods of Detroit. The program starts with the 48215 neighborhood on February 1.

Detroit cracks down on slumlords with new rental inspection program
"Starting Feb. 1, we are going to start moving across the city in a systematic way to make sure that anyone who lives in a rental property is living in safe and healthy environment for their families," Mayor Mike Duggan said in a news release.

"As part of this new approach, we are going to support good landlords and give renters greater protection against those who are not keeping their buildings in good condition."

Detroit to crack down on rental properties — starting in this ZIP code
There are nearly 40,000 rental properties in the city, the majority of which are not properly registered and have no certificate of compliance. In 2015, the city launched a process to encourage more landlords to register their properties. Since then, the city has increased its number of registered rental properties from about 2,000 to more than 6,000 to date.

Experts and studies warn there are many reasons for the increase, but the Detroit’s Health Department in February found a link between lead poisoning and housing demolitions, which can spread fine lead dust from house paint into the air that gets into the lungs of young children.
